According to the results of the annual international rating of “green” universities - UI GreenMetric, Minin University took the 7th position among Russian universities. The university entered the top three among 46 Russian universities-participants in the nomination "waste management". In the world ranking Minin University moved up by more than 10 positions, leaving behind many leading universities from Russia, the USA, Western and Northern Europe.
In 2019, 780 universities from more than 80 countries took part in the UI GreenMetric ranking. Universities competed with each other in six consolidated nominations: “green” infrastructure; energy saving; waste management; water saving; transport policy and education in the field of ecology and sustainable development.
The UIGreenMetric World University Rankings was launched in 2010 by the University of Indonesia. The rating is based on the concept of environmental sustainability, which includes three aspects: environmental, economic and social. The environmental aspect includes the use of natural resources, environmental management and pollution prevention, while the economic aspect includes cost and profit savings. The social aspect includes education, community and social involvement of universities in the processes of solving social problems.
Minin University is a member of the Green Universities of Russia Association. The university supports the activity of the student organization "Green Minin", which in 2019 organized about 20 environmental events. For instance: successful introducing of resource-saving practices and promoting the idea of separate waste collection. Representatives of the student organization develop a separate waste collection system on university campus, work with various environmental organizations of the Nizhny Novgorod city and invite them to Minin University to promote careful attitude to nature.
